Today s work consists of special orders .Three large pipes; 2 that are size "B" , and one "BB" my largest designation. The first is for DJ Bobby. He approached me at Corp with an idea for a "rocking horse"pipe. One with the rough plateaux on the bottom in a volcano shape. It took me awhile to find just the right block for it, a large piece of light feeling plateaux that had a "rightness "to it. Well, my guess was good as the pipe has a 1 star straight grain and a clean natural.
A close up:
The next pipe was a special order from the Corps show also. The customer has been unable to find extra large Peterson full bents. I took the pipe out of his mouth sketched and measured it and came up with this:
The last pipe is a special order from 2 Newark shows ago. A customer had a large Butera sandblast that he wanted duplicated. He loaned me the pipe and after a long search for the right ( and very large piece of plateaux) I got incredibly lucky !!! There are not too many pipes this large in a pristine or natural finish; almost all magnum size pipes are sandblasts but for this one:
This pipe is only the second to receive a solid gold star stem emblem. The gentleman has the other. It s hard to pick up from the picture but you can see it doesn t have the black enamel backround that the usual silver stars do. The pipe isn t quite finished as it s been sent out for a matching gold band as on the original pipe. The pipe has a highlighting understain. To do this, I put some faint stain on in the later sanding stages and most is sanded off, just leaving some coloring in the grain pattern.
