Today s work consists of three pipes. The first is a special order Cutty I finally got right for Doc Elder.Small is harder to make than large, especially in a Cutty but I finally got one he was happy with. Then, then, he asks me for a saddle Double comfort bit. All I could think of was here s an opportunity to crack the shank fitting a new bit ! I went up for a nap and the fitting was a snap and it looks better too. Goes to show you , the customers always right !
This is the original taper stem.
Here s the DC saddle. A couple days ago there was a question about my nomenclature. I was grading pipes a size higher when there was extra shape difficulty involved. Thanx to a suggestion from Dixies Sun and Dave Nestor, I ve added an "X" next to the size stamp, if neccessary , to denote extra difficulty and a slightly higher price. This is the first pipe to recieve an X. The Grading reads Cabernet, FW ,X .
The next pipe is available on the web. I found a bandsawed block that looked pretty nice laying on my bench. Decided to see what would come of it. Turned out totally flawless with good grain. We had just gotten a Larsen in for repair with an understain, and a gold overstain on top. I decided to try to duplicate it. I didn t get the color exact but it s not bad.
UB 270
Pristine, Size 6, one star
A couple days ago when I put up Kendal s pipe I mentioned that it was a copy of a Dr. Bob pipe. My friend Dr. B likes very large pipes. In fact, this pipe comes with a written warning not to leave unattended in your mouth ! Truly a Dr. Bob pipe. This is available on the web catalog as: ( at least until he see s it )
BB 33
Unfortunately, I had trouble getting good shots of this pipe. It has excellent grain, good black and orange contrast, and is proportional for it s size but can t seem to capture digitally.
