Todays work consists of a very special pipe for me as it s for my good friend Capt. Russ Tjepkema. He wrote me last nite after seeing the straight Featherweight I had posted the day before. He wrote he d be shipping out soon and was wondering if I could make him one like it. I was just heading up to watch the Yanks. By the third inning I was back in the shop working on Russ's pipe, trying to assauge my disapointment with the game.
I imagined Russ ducking out of the bridge on a rainy, foggy nite for a quick smoke; the wind and spray lashing the ship around him. I realized a delicate pipe like the previous FW wasn t going to make it. I beefed up the bowl walls and the shank. I added a silver band for extra strength and included an extra stem.
I also imagined him needing a "dress" pipe for an Admirals dinner, so one of the stems is plain black lucite and the two star grain I thought would be attractive yet conservative in this setting. This is probably all in my mind, yet I had fun with it :
