Today s work consists of the last few pipes of 2001. In the case of the first pipe, it was probably made in 1999 and has been waiting to be finished ever since. I was initially contacted by Mark Barron who wanted a pipe to commemorate his long service in the US military. The initial plan was to make a large Hexagon Calabash and somehow inscribe his mlitary emblems on the panel of the pipe. I m not much of a wood carver so I contacted Al Baier (Pimo) to do the carving work. He agreed to it but by the time the pipe was ready he got sick and was unable to do the work. The project came to a long halt as I cast around for someone else to do the fine carving and detail work.
While sitting in the dentists chair one afternoon, I was taken by the man s fine hand control as he did some delicate work on my mouth. I broached the subject about the pipe carving. He agreed to try and I sent him some briar to practice on. However , he turned out to be too busy and didn t think he d have the time to do the job properly. Another 6 months wasted. Then I happened to meet a fellow who did laser engraving. I took a pipe to his house and he was able to etch some fine patterns into the briar. I thought we had it licked then. Unfortunately this didn t work either as laser engraving is meant to be a repitious operation. The time needed to make one pattern takes hours and after sending him the designs he basically blew me off. Another year wasted!
At this point I had been having some engraved bands done on the 2000 Christmas pipe that turned out well. Mark and I discussed the idea of engraving the band to represent parts of his career. We decided to try that approach. This did the trick and tho my smith had some trouble doing a heavy silver band for a diamond shank he was able to do one that was acceptable. So after many years this project has been concluded.
The pipe graded out as a Two Star, Natural, Size 6X( Thanx Mark for your patience !! )
The next pipe is on the web catalog. It s Coral ASP 2001 Club Pipe. It s the last I ll be making.Work will commence soon on the 2002 pipe
